Challenge for the Throne
Princess Hurricane's story - Galaxy
The rules for a Royal Challenge are simple. Only female, sisters, neices, aunts, granddaughters and daughters are allowed to challenge the throne. Married in sisters and cousins cannot challenge. The fight is to the death - the survivor wins the throne and right to rule.
These were the rules that all dragons grew up knowing.
With very few exceptions, this was how the dragon society of Pyyhria worked.
These were also the rules that haunted many of the female heirs.
The ones that would be a double-edged sword.
The ones that would either allow them to ascend to the throne or be their demise.
These were also the words echoing through Queen Tidal's mind as she watched her sister, Hurricane polish her scales.
Queen Tidal had always been careful.
She had never mated, though she had many suitors.
She had made sure that her cousins and siblings had "unfortunate" accidents, which left them either infertile or six feet under.
The only thing that kept her from ruling forever was her obnoxiously popular sister. She had every SeaWing's admiration. Those multi-shaded purple scales and her heterochromatic eyes. She was an abomination that her dead mother had concived. The abomination that could destroy her life's work.
It had taken a lot of planning to win the Royal Challenge. She had to use her wits as she wasn't as strong as Hurricane.
By using a slow acting poison on the previous queen, she had then challenged her a few days after - easily winning.
Her wretched sister, Hurricane could easily take it all away from her, with her big stature and her popularity within the tribe. Her subjects would easily love her as queen, unlike her. It had taken them months, years even to warm up to her as their ruler.
Although, in a couple of hours, her worries would disappear as her dear sister was in for quite a surpise.
Princess Hurricane will soon perish, just like her mother.
As Princess Hurricane finished polishing her scales. She felt her scales tingle.
That didn't usually happen.
She shrugged it off and flew up towards the diplomatic level of the Summer Palace.
As she arrived the ambassadors from Queen Sunrise of the SkyWings and Queen Moonrunner of the NightWings were already there. The meeting was to create an alliance between the three kingdoms as there were signs of a war brewing.
She sat down at the head of the table and began the meeting.
" Welcome, to the Summer Palace. Queen Tidal of the SeaWings has arranged this meeting in hopes of becoming allies for the war to come.", Hurricane said. This was one of the only areas she could feel herself. The order of diplomacy was one of the comforts of being royalty.
" Yes, of course. Queen Sunrise has also sent with me, a message. The IceWings and SandWings were reported fighting at the jagged rocks between their borders.", the SkyWing ambassador said. The NightWing ambassador was about to open their mouth, when the floor began to shake. An earthquake! Hurricane thought.
" Quickly, let's get out of the cave!", she said. She began to escort the ambassadors out but the entrance to the cave was blocked by the falling rocks.
What now? There aren't any other ways out... unless we break through with sheer force.
As Hurricane was busy trying to find alternate routes, jagged stones began shooting out from the cave walls. One pierced through the NightWing's neck, killing them instantly. Blood was pouring out of their neck, their eyes white and their body limp.
More stones began sprouting out, coming closer to her. The SkyWing ambassador was cornerd off near the wall.
As the stones came closer, a beam of light came from the caved in wall. The voices of the guards could be heard. As more light came through, the stones retracted into the smooth walls, as if they were never there.
Hurricane went to the library to recover after the meeting.
Within the old scrolls she let her talons skim over the old paper and picked one up at random.
It was a history scroll.
The fall of the Summer Palace
This was during the SandWing Succession. Hurricane thought as she unrolled the scroll.
As she began reading she felt her scales tingle once more.
Suddenly, she smelt smoke.
Her head instantly whipped towards the balcony.
Fireballs were raining down from the canopy.
Three moons! The Summer Palace was under attack!
She spread her wings out and flew towards the sky. Dodging the fireballs, left and right.
The rain of fire began to grow thicker. Soon she couldn't see 5 meters in front of her.
She felt excruciating pain from her left wing.
A fireball had hit it.
The burn blistered and bubbled as she fell back towards the pool.
Her sight was turning white.
She could no longer feel the burning pain.
She felt the impact of her body hitting the water. An unpleasant crack was heard.
She no longer moved.
When Hurricane opened her eyes, she found herself in a room full of solid gold.
Her wings were bound in thick metal chains, her tail and claws were tied with metal bands.
She looked over to her left wing.
It was a scene out of a horror film.
Her once beautiful scales were ripped apart at the membrane, burned beyond repair. Dried blood covered every inch of her left wing, leaving her scales a colour so unsightly, it made her want to vomit.
She closed her eyes and tried to recover her memories.
The Summer palace was attacked. Like before, during the SandWing Succession. I was injured, where am I now?
A high pitched voice could be heard, along with many scattering claws.
The door to the solid gold room opened.
In came a giant pale red dragon with smoke billowing out of her nostrils. Six large red-scaled dragons entered behind her and spread out across the room.
She was captured by the SkyWings.
“ Welcome, Princess Hurricane. I assume you’re ready for tonight’s festivities. There will be great entertainment, followed by a grand feast. A special guest has been invited.”, the giant SkyWing said. She turned around and left. As she did, she flicked her tail and the six SkyWing guards rushed towards her.
They unchained her from the wall but did no more. They then escorted her out the door and through the hall.
It was a while until they stopped.
The guards had left her in front of grated gates. She could hear the roar of dragons, eagerly awaiting something.
A deep voice announced, “ Welcome to the Queen Sunrise’s new arena! Built in honour of her ancestor, Queen Scarlet. Tonight we have a surprise for you! An exhibition match between two dragons, widely know throughout Pyyhria! Hailing from the kingdom of the Sea, it’s Princess Hurricane!”
The gate rose up.
The flaming lights blinded her.
The roar of the dragons made her go deaf.
The thought of the whole thing made her sick.
She was in the legendary arena - the arena of death.
Hurricane was pushed out towards the centre of the arena.
The announcer was flying high above her.
There was a balcony on which Queen Sunrise was sitting. Watching this terrible fight, with hungry eyes.
Her sister, Queen Tidal perched happily beside her. A cunning smile upon her face.
The announcer spoke again, “ And as for her opponent. Also hailing from the kingdom of the Sea! It’s her majesty herself, Queen Tidal!”
Hurricane’s own sister flew down from the balcony.
“ Let’s have a fair fight. Okay?”, Tidal said in a sickeningly sweet voice.
“ CLAWS UP, TEETH READY, FIGHT!”, the announcer yelled.
Hurricane had just enough time to brace herself just as Tidal pounced.
