Prologue:

The door burst open. A green-eyed girl ran into the room, looking a bit flustered. “Sorry for being a little late,” she apologized, taking a seat.

“Hey, at least you came,” Riri replied, smiling, “and that’s good enough, Autumn, I’m sure. Besides, Thunderstorm gave us such a short notice, so I doubt many of us will be here in the Pokemon HQ at the moment.”

Autumn sighed. “True. So, Thunderstorm? What’s the reason for this meeting?”

“I’ve been worried about the Champion,” Thunderstorm answered. “I don’t think I’ve seen him since three years ago, and that’s concerning, isn’t it?”

Dynasty nodded. “That’s right. It’s like he… died, or something,” he said, giving the present Elite Four a look.

“That’s not true,” Riri protested, “he’s doing just fine! Right, Necro?”

“Oh- yes. He’s just busy, and out of the region. That’s all,” Necro replied, her voice quiet.

Something seems off, Thunderstorm thought, frowning, Are Riri and Necro lying? If so… why? Before she could voice any of her doubts, Riri spoke once more.

“Is that it, Thunderstorm? Anything else anyone wants to discuss with the rest of us here?” asked Riri, adjusting her turquoise scarf.

Each trainer in the room turned to look at the others in the room. Multiple glances were exchanged, but only silence could be heard in the room.

“Well, is this meeting over?” Quartz asked, shattering the silence. “Nobody seems to have anything to say.” She stood up, and promptly turned to the door. “Make sure to do your best, everyone! Bye!”

After Quartz exited the conference room, Dynasty wished the group farewell as well, his long legs leading him out of the room. Following him, Riri and Necro left as well, leaving only Autumn and Thunderstorm in the room.

“Goodnight.” Autumn yawned, and then turned to Thunderstorm. “It’s getting late. I’ll be going back, too,” she informed, standing up.

“Autumn, wait,” Thunderstorm called out, “doesn’t something seem wrong here?”

Autumn blinked, and asked, “Do you suspect Riri, Necro, and the other Elite Four from keeping something from us?”

“Yes,” Thunderstorm nodded. She paused. “I mean, something seems fishy here.”

“I get what you’re saying, but what can we do about it? They’re part of the Elite Four, and they have more authority and power than we Gym Leaders do,” Autumn pointed out, sighing.

Thunderstorm went silent, having no reply.

“And- oh. I forgot to ask Riri and Necro about replacing the Champion due to his absence. Again,” She mumbled, sagging her shoulders. Autumn yawned again, rubbing her eyes this time. “Come on, it’s late, Thundy. Worrying about the Champion right now won’t do anything.”

Watching Autumn leave, Thunderstorm sighed. As much as I want to do something about this… Autumn’s right. There’s no point.

"Change your perspective- and the reality changes."

Chapter 1:

“Attention, all passengers. We have nearly arrived at Piato Town, Prismia. If this is your destination, please prepare to exit the train with any luggage you may have in an orderly fashion.”

Gulfstream grinned upon hearing the train’s loud announcement. Finally, I’m here! She grabbed her bag, and after a few moments of rummaging through it, the blond-haired girl took out a neatly folded note. “Ah-ha,” she mumbled, “I found it!”

Unfolding the note, Gulfstream looked over the piece of paper. On the note, it read:

Ms. Gulfstream Oceanflower--

My name is Marie Pine, otherwise known as Professor Pine. Your parents are close friends of mine in the research world, and they’ve informed me of the fact that they’ve been busy travelling around for work, which means that you’ll be alone for a while. So, I’ve offered for you to come stay with me in Prismia, a region far to the east of where you live currently.

With this letter, I’ve attached a map of Prismia, and a Prismia-style Pokedex.

As far as I’m aware, you aren’t a trainer yet, correct? Once you arrive here, I’ll help you catch your first Pokemon, and you can then set off on a journey, strengthening bonds with your new companion. That’s also why I’ve sent you a Pokedex as well; surely it’ll come in handy.

I’ve also arranged a train ticket for your arrival. The town I live in - Piato Town - has its own train station, which will be convenient for transportation.

Please make sure to board the correct train. I’ll be waiting for you.

-Professor Marie Pine

Gulfstream finished reading, and stashed the paper away. Through the windows of the train, she could see the late night sky, and up ahead, Piato station. There it is, she thought, there’s my new home.

As more and more of Piato Town came into view, the train began to slow down. Eventually, the locomotive came to halt, and the loudspeaker played once more, reminding the passengers to exit if this was their station.

Gulfstream stood up, exited the train car into the station. Outside, she saw a woman roughly 5’10" waving at her. Is that the professor? Gulfstream wondered, walking over to her.

“You’re Gulfstream Oceanflower, correct?” the lady asked as Gulfstream approached her.

Gulfstream nodded violently. “Yup! That’s me!”

“Good. I’m Professor Pine, nice to meet you. Follow me, I’ll be bringing you to your new home.” The professor swiftly turned around, strolling away from the train station.

Gulfstream ran after her, startled by the sudden action.

After a couple of minutes of walking, the duo arrived at a medium-sized building. “Are we here?” Gulfstream asked, taking in the sight.

Professor Pine took out a set of keys, and answered, “Yes, this is it. Welcome to my lab, which doubles as my house.” Inserting a key into the doorknob, the professor opened up the door.

In the doorway in front of them was a pale girl who seemed to be roughly Gulfstream’s age. “Hi,” she greeted shyly. She turned to Gulfstream. “Um, you’re Roughsteam, right?”

“Roughsteam?” Gulfstream echoed, confused. “I’m Gulfstream.”

The girl’s face turned pink, embarrassed. “Oh. Whoops.”

“Anyway,” Professor Pine started, “this is my assistant, Natalie. Gulfstream, you’ll both be sharing a room with each other, starting today.”

Gulfstream shook Natalie’s hand. “Alright,” she said, unconsciously sagging her shoulders. Didn’t expect there to be someone else here. It’s alright, I’m sure we’ll be able to become friends.

Professor Pine turned her gaze to the clock on the wall. “Okay, that’s enough for tonight. It’s past midnight now, and you should both be getting some sleep for tomorrow. Natalie, will you take Gulfstream to the room she'll be staying in?”

Natalie nodded, while Gulfstream asked, “What are we doing tomorrow?”

The dark-skinned professor smiled. “You’ll see,” she responded, walking away to what seemed to be her room, leaving Natalie to lead Gulfstream to their room.

“Come on,” Natalie mumbled, motioning Gulfstream to follow. The two passed by a display of interesting-looking machinery and what seemed to be a library before finally stopping at a door. Natalie turned the doorknob, and Gulfstream was surprised at what she saw.

Two corners of the room where taken up by beds, and the other two were taken up by identical desks. The door was placed right in the middle of the wall, which made it seem like Gulfstream was seeing double.

“Well, I’m off to get some sleep,” Natalie informed, “and in case you need it, the bathroom’s over there.” She pointed to down the hall.

“Thanks,” Gulfstream replied. The blond girl went over to her corner, and put down her bag. Unpacking, she reflected on her day in Prismia so far. I was worried that this new region, as exciting as it is, would be scary, but Professor Pine and Natalie seem pretty nice! I wonder what we’re going to be doing tomorrow...

"Change your perspective- and the reality changes."

Chapter 2

Tick. Tock.

All dressed, Natalie waited downstairs for the professor along with Gulfstream. The loud ticking noise of the clock was making her even uncharacteristically impatient, and Natalie began tapping her foot to the tempo of the sound. Where is she? Professor Pine said that we were going to be doing important things today.

Finally, the professor casually walked into the room, smiling at the two girls. “Are you both ready? Once we leave, we’re not going to be coming back for a while,” she warned, grabbing the keyring hanging on the wall.

“Yup, I'm ready,” Gulfstream answered, excited, while Natalie gave Professor Pine a nod.

“Good. Come on, we have quite a bit to do.”

Natalie made sure her messenger bag was closed before following Gulfstream and the professor out the door. Hopefully everything I need is in here, or else I’ll be letting the professor down.

Gulfstream seemed to be waiting for Natalie. “Hey, Natalie. Do you happen to know what we’re going to be doing today?”

Natalie shook her head. “Nope. All she told me was that we were going to do something important today.”

“Oh, okay,” Gulfstream replied, looking slightly dejected at this news. “The professor wouldn’t tell me, either.”

Right at that moment, Professor Pine turned around, and said, “Girls? Come on, we need to hurry, or else we won’t be able to get everything done.” She continued her stride forward.

The pair ran after the professor, and Natalie was surprised. The professor? In a rush? Now I’m even more curious to learn what we’re doing.

The group strolled around Piato Town in silence, leaving Natalie free to enjoy the view. Piato Town wasn’t the most modern area in Prismia, but it was surely one of the prettiest, especially in the blooming springtime atmosphere. Adjusting her purple headscarf, Natalie enjoyed the sight of the warm colored tulips and the rising sun.

Suddenly, the group came to a halt, stopping in front of a small, cozy-looking house. Natalie recognized this place: it was the residence of Time, a boy who was slightly older than her. If she remembered right, he didn’t have any Pokémon yet. Could it be…?

“Here’s our first spot,” Professor Pine announced, bringing down both of her arms into her lab coat pocket.. “Natalie, please knock on the door.”

Natalie nodded, but instead of knocking on the door, she pressed the doorbell. It was a more convenient way to do it, and Natalie knew that the professor wouldn't care about her doing the exact action anyway.

As the group waited for someone to answer the door, Gulfstream asked, “Who lives here?”

“Time,” Professor Pine answered, tapping her foot.

“Who?”

Right at that moment, the door opened, and a black-haired boy wearing a navy-colored jacket stood in the doorway. His eyes lit up upon seeing who it was. “Oh, Professor Pine and Natalie! Hello!”

“Hi, Time,” Natalie greeted quietly.

“Who is that with you?” Time asked, “I don’t recognize her.”

“I’m Gulfstream!” Gulfstream piped up, “And it’s nice to meet you!”

“It’s good to meet you too.”

Professor Pine cleared her throat, causing Natalie and the others to look at her. “Time, are your parents home?” she asked.

Time shook his head. “No, why?”

“I wanted to tell them something,” the emerald-eyed professor sighed, “but it's fine.” She took out a yellow notepad from her lab coat pocket along with a pen, and scribbled something on it. “Put this note some place where they’ll find it, and come with me.”

“O-okay,” Time replied, his eyes skimming over the letter. He then went inside, and Professor Pine stashed her pen and paper in her pocket.

What does that letter say? Natalie curiously wondered, tilting her head slightly.

As soon as Time came back, the professor told the group, “Come on now, let’s go.”

“Where are we going next, Professor?” Gulfstream inquired as Professor Pine began to escort the group somewhere else.

Natalie almost had to jog to keep up with the professor’s long strides, curious about the answer as well.

“We’re going to have to pick up Lector, too, so we’re going there next.”

“Huh?”

Both Gulfstream and Time piped up at once, confused. Pine, however, and continued moving forward without saying anything.

Natalie turned to Gulfstream. “Lector is a girl who lives in Piato Town as well,” she explained.

“Okay, but then why was Time so surprised?” Gulfstream asked, her voice the same, soft volume that Natalie was using.

Natalie glanced at Time, who seemed to be paying attention to their conversation. She shrugged. “Ask him, because I don’t know.”

Gulfstream repeated her question to Time.

“Oh, well, I didn’t expect Lector to be part of this, too. Not after the Incident,” he replied, trying to push his bangs out of his right eye.

Natalie blinked. “The Incident? How is that relevant?”

At the same time, Gulfstream asked, “What is this ‘incident’ you guys are talking about?”

“The Incident? To be honest, I don’t know much of the details. But around three years ago, Lector lost her memory due to some really bad injury she got during battle or fight of some sort.”

“What!?” Gulfstream yelled, her eyes wide. Professor Pine turned around, and gave Gulfstream a look before returning to face forward.

Time nodded solemnly. “We call that event the Incident, and it’s relevant because today’s the day I’m getting a Pokémon, according to the note that the professor wrote. If Lector’s coming with us, then it means that she’s getting one, too.”

Natalie frowned. “I still don’t get how that relates.”

“Lector lost her memory due to a Pokémon battle or something like that, right? So, it’s a little surprising that she’s getting Pokémon so soon after it. That’s all.”

The three of them walked ahead in an awkward silence, barely realizing that Professor Pine was far ahead of them.

As bad as it is to lose your memory, at least Lector’s recovering just fine, Natalie thought, looking down. Maybe getting a Pokémon might actually help her.

Suddenly, Gulfstream let out a yelp. “Hey!”

Everyone stopped, even the professor. “What’s the matter, Gulfstream?” Professor Pine asked, looking concerned.

Gulfstream had fallen on the ground, and looked rather annoyed. “She pushed me,” she explained, pointing at a teenager dressed in blues and purples.

“Excuse me? You were in my way,” the girl retorted, putting her hands on her hip.

“That’s not true!” Gulfstream snapped, “You were-”

The professor cut Gulfstream off. “It doesn’t matter now, so stop fighting, Gulfstream. And you, miss- I haven’t seen you around town before. What’s your name?”

“Nova,” she responded, “although I don’t know why you care.” Nova glared at the group, making Natalie feel slightly uncomfortable. What’s her problem?

“Alright, that’s quite enough about that. Sorry for bothering you, Nova,” Professor Pine apologized, “and go do whatever you were going to do.”

Nova didn’t respond. Instead, she simply walked away, giving the professor one last look as she left.

“Well then, let’s go. Hopefully, we won’t be held up this time,” Pine said, turning to Natalie, Gulfstream, and Time.

“Okay!” Gulfstream began to skip, following the professor. Time and Natalie jogged after them, not wanting to fall behind.

Soon, they arrived in front of another house, in another neighborhood. Without wasting any time, Professor Pine knocked on the door, asking, “Is Lector home?”

The door swung open almost immediately, and Natalie could see a lady older than the professor standing at the door. She had small, sparkling ice blue eyes, and was smiling. “Marie! Good to see you! Is today the day? By the way, Lector’s should be coming,” the woman informed.

Professor Pine gave a smile, and replied, “Nice to see you too, Bella. Yes, today’s the day; Lector’s getting her first Pokemon.”

At that moment, a brown-haired girl roughly 11 years old arrived by the door. Pushing up her round, cyan glasses, she greeted the group.

“Hi! Are you Lector?” Gulfstream asked, waving.

“Yup! What’s your name?”

“I’m Gulfstream.”

Natalie glanced at the professor, who had sighed. I’m guessing Pine isn’t too happy about us constantly introducing Gulfstream to everyone in town, she thought.

Suddenly, she felt a shiver down her spine, along with the feeling that someone was watching them. Is… someone there? Natalie observed the others, but none of them seemed to have noticed anything. I’ll ask them later, when we’re travelling to the next destination.

“We can be friends, right?” Lector inquired, looking anxious for an answer.

Gulfstream nodded, and was about to open her mouth to reply. However, Professor Pine spoke before she could.

“Okay, Bella, we’ll be going. The rest of you, follow me.”

Once more, the professor suddenly began moving, leaving the others to hurry up after her once giving their own goodbyes to Bella, Lector’s mother. In the rush, Natalie forgot to ask the others about the chills she experienced.

“Hey, professor! Wait up!”

Nova

Throw me to the wolves, and I’ll come back...leading the pack

Once upon a time...there was humanity in the world

I see humans, but no humanity

Don’t bother, “I’m only human after all”

Chapter 3:

Man, Professor Pine was slow.

Even though Nova left her hiding spot by the girl’s house (Bella and Lector’s, was it?) a few minutes after Pine and her group did, she was still way ahead of them. In fact, she was already on the rooftop of the professor’s “new trainer building”. As Nova waited, she checked her Dazzle Device, a special electronic only given to the members of Team Dazzle.

Her most recent order was on there:

Hey, underling!

I have an urgent task from you, straight from the boss. Why did I choose you for this? Why does it matter, underling?!

Go to Piato Town. Stalk the professor. Then report. Any questions? Don’t ask me.

Nova sighed. The Dazzle Device was convenient, but mostly for verbal communication only. All of the recorded tasks stated the bare minimum for the job to protect the organization’s goals from being outright discovered, but that would mean that any order given through a call would be deleted. Luckily, Nova had a good memory, so she remembered Marx’s exact command, anyway.

After who knows how long, Professor Pine and her group finally arrived at the door. Nova quickly tapped the Team Dazzle logo - a fuchsia colored “D” surrounded by a few yellow sparkles - to start the device’s recording function. This way, if I hear anything important, I can just give the admins this.

“Here we are,” the professor said, unlocking and entering the building. Her loud, clear voice was now slightly muffled. “This place is full of Pokémon that are either being being observed, or Pokémon that need some treatment. It’s my go-to place for new trainers, as the Pokémon here are usually pretty friendly.”

All the kids, except for the girl who seemed to be the professor’s assistant, looked around the place in total awe.  Through the glass rooftop window, Nova could see that the interior was had a outdoor look to it, with the ground covered in grass and tiny streams of water flowing around. Pokémon of varying types wandered around, with some hiding from the group, and some curiously approaching them.

“As you can probably tell, we’re here because you all are receiving Pokémon today.”

All of them, huh? Nova wondered, careful to keep silent. That means Prismia’s getting four more goody-goody trainers. That’s not good for us.  Was this the information Marx and the boss wanted me to find? I guess I should keep watching.

The girl Nova knocked down earlier - Gulfstream, if she remembered right - practically jumped up and down upon hearing this news. “Yes!”

“Gulfy, calm down,” Professor Pine’s assistant said. “You’re going to scare all the Pokémon.”

“I don’t think that’s the case,” the black-haired kid responded, “as the Pokémon aren’t running away.”

Professor Pine sighed, and then continued talking. “As I was saying, you’ll all be taking care of one of these Pokémon, as one of your partners. I’ll be giving you all the liberty of choosing any Pokémon you wish, as long as it isn’t Ribombee.”

“Why not Ribombee?” Gulfstream asked as she tilted her head.

“The Ribombee is one of mine, that’s why,” the professor responded. As on cue, a Ribombee flew up to the professor and gave a sweet buzz. “Now, go on. Find your new friend!”

The group immediately scattered, searching. Nova watched as the four soon-to-be trainers greeted various Pokémon and interacted with them. Bored, she took a look at her own Pokéball, which contained her Fletchinder. Sorry, friend. I’d let you watch, too, but then we might be noticed. And that won’t be any good.

Below, Nova saw the professor’s purple-haired assistant approach an Espurr, which had huge, round eyes. The girl kneeled down to speak with the Pokémon. “Hi, there,” she greeted.

The Espurr tilted her head. After a moment, it slowly walked towards the assistant.

Even though it’ll probably become a foe one day, that Espurr’s cute. Nova shook her head. Nova, now is not the time. You’re on a mission.

Meanwhile, the only boy seemed to have chosen a Charmander, while Gulfstream, that annoying girl, held a Shinx in her hands. Lector was being followed by a Snivy, who she was calling “Ryo”.

When everyone regrouped, Professor Pine took out four Pokéballs from her lab coat’s pockets. “Alright,” she started, “each of you take one and catch your new partner with a Pokéball.”

When nobody except her assistant moved, Pine frowned. “Do none of you except Natalie know how to catch Pokémon? It’s an essential lesson, so please speak up if that’s the case.”

“Uh,” Lector mumbled, looking embarrassed. “No, I don’t know...”

“Tell us, Professor!” Gulfstream exclaimed.

The other kid didn’t respond, but Nova could tell he didn’t have any idea how to catch Pokémon, either.

Seriously, what kind of amateurs are these people? Nova wondered. Oh well. I suppose recording the professor’s instruction might be useful to Team Dazzle.

“Okay, I’ll take you through this step by step,” Professor Pine said, taking a few strides. “Time, would you move out of the way? That Mareep behind you-- I’ll be catching him as an example.”

The boy, Time looked behind him, and took a step to the left. The fluffy Wool Pokémon turned to look at the professor.

“First, you’ll usually want to weaken the Pokémon you’re catching. You can do that through a Pokémon battle, or by inflicting status conditions on it.

“In this case, that won’t be necessary, as these Pokémon are all rather tame.”

To prove Professor Pine’s point, the Mareep gave a “baa”, and stayed put.

“Now, you aim your Pokéball,” Pine instructed, winding up her arm, “and throw.”

The Mareep was hit with the red-and-white ball, and was caught. Gulfstream clapped, her eyes bright.

Nova sighed softly. Has she really never seen anyone do that before?

The professor picked up the Pokéball, and let the newly caught Mareep out of it. “Now you four try.”

Nova gave a small, quiet yawn, but continued watching the kids catch their first Pokémon. Lector, despite looking like the youngest, had the easiest time doing it, which was a bit strange to Nova. Gulfstream and Time seemed to be doing well, for novices, at least, and Natalie was the slowest one of the group.

The professor then began to drone on about the Prismia Pokedex, which Nova figured didn’t need to be recorded. She woke up the Dazzle Device and tapped the pink “D” to stop the audio from being recorded. Tapping a few more buttons, Nova sent the clip to Marx, and attached a note:

Here it is: a recording of what important events happened here with Professor. These guys might be a problem, they might not be. It’s too soon to tell. I'll be following them.
