Hello wonderful readers!
Thank you so much, Sarah, for your awesome posts about all the new tribes! Oh my goodness, seeing the LeafWings in color makes me so incredibly happy – even seeing the very first sketches for the three new tribes made me feel like Joy just poured sunshine into my head. She took my vague ideas and transformed them into the most glorious shiny new things! They’re all so spectacular . . . do you guys have a favorite tribe yet?
Perhaps it would help to know a little more about the LeafWings, although of course now I have to figure out what to say without giving too much away! If any of you have seen or heard the prologue for Book Eleven, you might know that the LeafWings were the predominant tribe on Pantala when Clearsight arrived there, two thousand years ago.
But by the beginning of chapter one, when we meet Blue the SilkWing, the Tree Wars have happened, the Pantalan forests have been cleared, and the LeafWings are all . . . gone.
(Or ARE they?)
(“Of course they are!” says Blue.)
(SKEPTICAL FACE, say all you thoughtful, intelligent readers!)
(“No, no, no,” says Luna (Blue’s sister). “The LeafWings are completely gone, you guys, everyone says so!”)
Except . . . if they’re really all gone, why are there posters all over the Hives warning everyone about how dangerous LeafWings are? What about the rumors that they might still be out there somewhere, plotting their revenge or a new start to the war? Could even Queen Wasp destroy an entire tribe?
I GUESS WE’LL FIND OUT. (Very soon!) (No spoilers here face!)
It’s so interesting that a couple of you asked about the GrassWings in the last week or two. A while ago, someone asked me if I’d invented any other tribes that didn’t get included in the kingdoms of Pyrrhia, and my answer was the GrassWings—because the Pyrrhian tribes are mostly inspired by their habitats, and the one habitat I considered but didn’t really include was a savanna/plains environment. I tinkered with some ideas for this tribe, although if I’d kept going, I’m not sure GrassWings would have been the ultimate name—that’s just where I started. But in the end, I decided to stick with seven tribes, and the GrassWings were the least developed in my head, so out the window they went.
Then when I started thinking about new tribes for Pantala, I reeled the GrassWings back in and thought about them some more. I still liked the idea of the savanna habitat—and you’ll see that in the area around the Hives.
But in the research phase, I watched an amazing documentary called Africa, in which the narrator mentioned that a big part of the current savanna (in the Great Rift Valley) used to be a primordial forest, stretching for miles and miles. And that really grabbed my brain—a grassland that used to be a forest. Where did all the trees go? What happened to them? What if there was a tribe that lived in those trees and called them home?
So the GrassWings kind of morphed into the LeafWings instead . . . with the added bonus that I can name them all after trees! (I mean, IF WE EVER MEET ANY, which of course we won’t, because they’re so totally extinct.)
All right, that noise you hear is probably my editor’s brain exploding, so I’ll make myself stop—but in just ONE MORE WEEK you’ll be able to read the book and find out everything for yourself! Yay! (OK, not everything . . . I had to save some secrets for the next four books!)
I adore you all! Thank you for being excited about the new tribes—I’m sending millions of confetti cannons of love at Joy for making them so beautiful, and at you for being so awesome.
Oh, and don’t forget, one more week until the launch party in Washington, DC . . . hopefully see some of you there! Yay!
