Prologue

Four dragons crept through the darkness of the NightWing Historical Museum. They didn't look like any of the famous dragons depicted in the paintings and statues. They were different than the NightWings. They were different from any other dragons on the continent.

"Look, here's the door connecting to the palace," one whispered, pointing with one golden talon to a set of thick mahogany doors. A sentry stood at rapt attention in front of the huge, heavy-looking silver knobs.

"Hey, who are you?" he said suspiciously, spotting them huddling in the shadows. "You're not supposed to be here!"

One of the strangers puffed a wisp of glittery smoke out of her nose, which the guard inhaled accidentally. He began to sway on his feet, then fell to the ground in a snoring heap.

"This way," another stranger murmured, opening the doors as quietly as he could. "Hurry."

The group tiptoed in silence down several corridors. There weren't many guards tonight because of the big party Queen Soulkeeper was throwing for the RainWing ambassadors. They had planned for that- and every tiny factor in between.

The royal hatchery was unguarded, like much of the palace. Good. They were already behind schedule- they couldn't easily afford more setbacks.

The egg was easy to find. In the biggest nest, with maybe six other eggs, shining silver like a star. Just like the prophecy said.

One dragon, with the utmost care, reached into the nest and carefully, carefully, picked it up.

She carried it back just outside the hatchery, rejoining her companions.

Four more puffs of glitter-smoke, and they were gone.

Chapter One

Flying toward near-certain doom was not exactly high on Altair's Things to Do list.

Neither was flying through a storm to get there.

"Are you sure the MoonWings will accept the peace treaty?" she shouted over the shrieking wind. The rain weighed down her wings, as if trying to drag her out of the air.

"You mean Queen Luna, not the MoonWings," Queen Libra called back. "And she agreed to have the meeting, so that's something."

"Well, yeah, but our tribes have been enemies for, what, ten years? I just think we shouldn't be too surprised if they reject the treaty and start the war up again," Altair replied. Queen Libra gave her a wry smile, but didn't say anything. Altair knew what that meant: end of conversation.

She absentmindedly touched the amulet dangling from her neck. It had been in Altair's family for generations, since her great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-lots-of-greats-grandmother, and had been passed on from mother to daughter for years. Now it was hers, but she still couldn't figure out the weird runes inscribed on the little silver tablet pendant. It hung on a fine silver chain, just like the "spirit-amulets" of every other StarryWing.

Well... it wasn't really her spirit-amulet. It was just hanging on the silver chain with her actual spirit-amulet: a feather from an eagle's neck. The feather seemed to be repelling the rain: not a drop fell on it or the silver tablet.

A call from Queen Libra snapped Altair out of her thoughts. "Almost there," the queen yelled to the rest of the peacekeeping committee. Indeed, Altair could see the outline of Queen Luna's palace up ahead. Just a little farther... was it her imagination, or was the tablet glowing?...

Then claws seemed to grab at her from behind. She struggled, but with a soft pop, she vanished into thin air.
