Jade Mountain was huge.
Eventide would probably have thought something else (something more useful, maybe. A battle plan would have been nice.) if she hadn't been so completely overwhelmed by the vastness. Two twin peaks, sharper and higher than any pictures could have conveyed. One stone body, looming before her like her doom. It probably was. Dragons of all kinds swarmed about the entrance, chatting and eating and hugging parents goodbye. Logically, she could tell that there were fewer than thirty, but her overactive imagination multiplied this number to at least one hundred. Eventide shook her head, spikes clattering. She was being ridiculous. Best to get this over with- go inside, find the library. Focus on her nonexistent battle plan.
That was actually a lot harder than it sounded.
Taking a deep breath, the hybrid flared her wings, tossed her clumsily handmade bag over her shoulder, being careful not to damage the scrolls within, and stepped inside.
Inside the halls of the school, it was darker, slightly smaller, but no less noisy. It took a moment for her eyes to get used to the light, but once they did, she made out a small front desk with an overstuffed journal lying on it. A note on the journal read, Off to check supplies. Back at noon. Slightly relieved that she didn't have to talk to anyone- yet- Eventide let out a sigh. Maybe she could do this. (Most likely she still couldn't, but it was nice to have a rare moment of optimism, right?)
Unfortunately, it was only when she was deep in the labyrinthine halls of Jade Mountain that Eventide realized that she had no idea where she was, much less the library. Great. I'm lost. What an auspicious way to begin my first year here.
And that was when, in a flash of greenish scales, a dragon walked right into her.
Eventide yelped and stumbled back, falling tailfirst onto the hard stone floor. Her head cracked painfully against the wall, and she let out an involuntary cry of pain. The dragon who had bumped into her exclaimed almost simultaneously, "I'm so sorry! Are you okay?"
Eventide gritted her teeth and forced herself up. "I'm fine," she snarled, embarrassed. In the confusion, she hadn't gotten a good look at her assaulter. It was what appeared to be a RainWing, but with IceWing-IceWing-y spikes and a shimmer of silver disappearing over his tail just as she finished looking him over. They did appear to be definitely male.
He looked hurt. "Good. I guess. I'm Greensilver?" His curiosity overcame his shyness. "Why are you over here? This path leads to," he paused, turning pale teal around the cheeks, "suntime spots," he admitted.
Eventide wrinkled her nose and forced what she had to say out of her mouth. "I don't care. Do you happen to know the way to the library?"
A hint of anger came over his face. "Back. Left twice, then right. You can't miss it." He disappeared down the tunnel, flashing one last glance at her. She glared back, then began to make her way to the library. My first day here and I've gotten lost, hit my head, and somehow offended someone. Can things get any better? Probably they can, but knowing my luck... they won't.
