Chapter 1: The Beginning
"Hey, Turquoise!" I called to her. Turquoise had been in deep conversation with a few Mudwings, but when she heard me, she turned in my direction. "Turquoise!" I called again. "Have any luck with the Queen?"
"No." she sighed. "But don't worry, I got one for you." Her purple scales, as well as her turquoise glow stripes, seemed to flash friend? to me. I knew her, and she did a few favors to me sometimes, but we weren't really friends. Not much, at least.
"I wonder what their faces will look like when they feel it." I laughed as I imagined it. "It's going to be great! Where's that eel I was hunting for?"
"Here." replied Turquoise, handing me a small, cylinder shaped metal and glass tank with an eel in it. "I managed to sneak one from the prisons. With Whirlpool's permission, of course."
"Thanks!" I said in eagerness, grabbing the container. The eel twitched nervously. "I'll be back soon!" I shouted as I headed to the palace.
"See you later!" Turquoise shouted back as she saw me go, then turned to the Mudwings again. I wonder who they are. I thought as I swam to my room. But, inwardly, I knew it didn't matter.
I stopped when I reached my room and looked around. A few copper wires were sticking out of the wall, an invention of mine and part of what I called the "ultimate prank", and my bed, a few furry pelts, were tucked over a stone ledge. My room was plain, but it needed to be to keep my plans secret. I chuckled and touched the eel container to the wires.
I heard a sizzling and a loud yelp from a dragon who sounded like Jellyfish, the palace cook. Hah! I thought in devilish delight. Take that, Jellyfish! I touched the eel to a second wire, and I heard a loud "OW!", this time sounding like Whirlpool. I smiled again as I thought about Whirlpool jumping around with his tail between his hind legs, yelling in pain. I did it again. And again. I just stowed the eel away under my blankets when I heard my father's furious roar.
Uh oh. I thought. I've awakened the beast now.
He stormed in my room and opened the door. He was completely beside himself, because he was huffing and puffing, and his eyes were red. His claws gripped the ground so hard, I was afraid he would tear a hole in it. "OUT WITH IT, VIPERFISH!" he shouted, so loud it felt like a million dragons were yelling. "WHAT DID YOU DO!?!?"
"Erm.....um...." I stuttered, trying to find words. But before I could speak again, my father moved aside and pointed to the hallway outside. A huge amount of smoke and fire had now invaded the hallway.
"A REACTION IN THE KITCHENS CAUSED A FIRE, WHICH IS NOW BURNING UP THE SUMMER PALACE!" he crushed a shell he had been holding in his claws. "AND IT WAS CAUSED BY A BOLT OF ELECTRICITY HITTING A PILE OF WOOD TIMBERS, WHICH SET THEM ON FIRE!"
Oh no. This was not good. But I had no idea. MY father calmed down a bit, but he was still angry.
"Get out." he growled at me. "NOW."
"Wait." I pleaded, trying to save my scales. "I didn't...."
"GET OUT AND NEVER COME BACK!" shouted my father, louder this time. And this time, I obeyed, only turning to my father to cough through the smoke, "Where?"
"Out of the kingdom." replied my father. "Your mother and I have had enough."
My eyes widened in horror. "But...."
"GO!" shouted my father, throwing the shards of the shell at me. This time, I ran, tears stinging my eyes. I dove in the water and swam away, and I didn't look back, for a while, until I reached the coral reef border, surfaced, and looked at the palace from far away.
It was chaos. Against the night sky, dragons were flying, carrying buckets of water to the fire and dumping out loads onto the blaze, but it was doing almost nothing. Fire was billowing from almost every window. I saw some dragons not being able to bear the weight of the pails and drop into the fire like flies. And all of this was my fault.
I looked down in shame. I could have fixed it. If my parents had let me stay.....
Then, I growled. They didn't care about me. They never did. I saw my mother, thinking she cared about all the dragons of her kingdom. But she looked down on me. She didn't care.
I flew faster, passing the outskirts of the Seawing Kingdom and landing on the soft marshes of the Mudwing Kingdom. I grabbed a piece of coal and a leather bag that had rolled under my talons. I knew what I wanted to do to her, and all the queens. They would care for no one. Just like Mother treated me. I stared at the coal with fire in my eyes and began to speak the enchantment. Soon, Mother. I thought. Very soon.
