I found the cake recipie on the internet, it's called "The Best Chocolate Cake Recipe Ever." I would link it but uhh we can't do links welp.
Two minutes later, they had found an article called "The Best Chocolate Cake Recipe Ever" on Aether's computer. Aether frowned, listing off the ingredients as Dynasty ran to go get them.
"Uhh, all purpose flour." Dynasty opened the cupboard to find the flour. He pulled it down, accidentally dropping it, and making it explode. Flour now covered his clothes. Great...
Aether laughed. "Uhh, we've got another bag on the lower cupboard." Dynasty leaned down and pulled it out, careful to not spill it this time.
"Sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt," Aether read as Dynasty hurried to gather the ingredients.
Aether frowned. "...Expresso powder? Yeah I'm pretty sure we've got none of that."
"Guess we'll have to go without it then," Dynasty said, shrugging.
"Guess so," Aether said. "Hmm one cup milk, buttermilk, almond milk, or coconut milk." Opening the fridge, Dynasty pulled out the milk.
"Uhh vegetable oil, canola oil, or melted coconut oil." Dynasty rummaged through another cupboard. "We've got vegetable oil here."
Aether smiled. "This is going better than I though
ought, especially since I've never baked a cake before."
"Wow, really? I've never baked a cake either"
"Guess that's one thing we have in common." Aether glanced back down at the list. "Uhh, two large eggs."
Dynasty opened the refrigerator but couldn't find any eggs. "There's none here!"
Aether facepalmed. "I forgot, they're in the main kitchen. We'll have to grab em'."
Aether ran out of the kitchen and led Dynasty down a few halls to the main kitchen, marked by double doors that read MAIN KITCHEN on the nameplate. Below it was a sign that said DO NOT ENTER UNLESS YOU ARE AN EMPLOYEE.
"Uh...Aether?" Dynasty pointed at the sign. "I don't think we're supposed to be here."
"The workers are on their break," he said, smiling evilly. "We can nab some before they return. Here, take off your shoes, you'll be quieter."
They slipped off their shoes, then Aether slowly opened the door, holding it for Dynasty. "The eggs are in the big fridge over there."
Dynasty nodded, running over to the fridge. He opened it, immediately spotting the eggs. Stacks and stacks of egg cartons were stuck in the fridge. He grabbed one from a lower stack, then ran back to Aether, closing the fridge.
Suddenly, a noise came from the front of the kitchen. A voice.
"Ugh, break is always so shoooort."
Another voice. "I know right, it's so unfair!"
"Oh no, they're off break early," Aether hissed. "Quick, hand me the eggs and we'll run."
Dynasty handed Aether the eggs and they ran, keeping as quiet as possible. Unfortunately, Dynasty's elbow knocked against a stack of metal bowls, sending them clattering to the ground.
"What was that?" the first voice said. A girl ran into the kitchen, spotting Dynasty and Aether. "INTRUDERS! GET THEM!" she screeched.
Aether and Dynasty turned and ran, crashing through the doors and sprinting down the hall. They dashed through the halls until they skidded to a stop at the kitchen where they were making the cake.
"Agh!" Aether screeched as he skidded to a stop, then slipped and fell backwards, letting go of the eggs, which flew into the air. Dynasty ran towards them, and caught them for a second, before they slipped out of his hands and fell on the ground.
"NO!" screeched Dynasty, running over to the eggs. Aether ran over and looked at them too.
"That one is destroyed, that one's destroyed...oh, what have I done?" Aether buried his head in his hands. "It was all a waste..."
"Wait--this one's usable, though cracked. This one too! We can still bake the cake!"
"R-really?" Aether's face lit up and he hugged Dynasty. "You are the best!"
"T-thanks..." Dynasty said, blushing again.
They ran back inside with the eggs. Crim frowned at them. "What happened?"
"Nothing," Aether replied innocently. Crim huffed in an emo way and turned up his music.
"TURN DOWN THE BRENDON URIE," Aether shouted.
"NO," Crim screeched.
"FINE THEN AT LEAST WEAR EARBUDS" Aether screeched.
"FINE," Crim screamed, pulling some out and plugging them in.
"ALSO DON'T PUT THE VOLUME SO LOUD!!! YOU DON'T WANT TO GO DEAF DO YOU???" Crim glared at Aether but turned down the volume.
Aether ran back to his computer.
"Vanilla extract, boiling water, and chocolate frosting." Dynasty pulled out the vanilla extract and a giant bottle of water.
"Uhh we don't have frosting." Dynasty frowned.
Aether sighed. "I guess you'll have to go without frosting Crim."
"DON'T CARE" Crim sobbed. He was crying again.
"Preheat oven to 350º F. Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by spraying with baking spray or buttering and lightly flouring," Aether said, reading off the directions."
Dynasty pulled out a bunch of cake pans while Aether set the oven to the right temerature. "Which one is 9-inch again?"
Aether frowned. "Uhh, there's a tape ruler in my left drawer on my desk. I'll go grab it."
He ran back and pulled out the tape ruler. Running back, he handed it to Dynasty, who measured the cake pans. "These ones will work...wait...why do we need two?"
"Maybe the recipe makes two cakes?" Aether said. "Crim can have one and we can share the other one."
"Er, okay," Dynasty said. He grabbed a can of baking spray and sprayed the pans. "What do we do next?"
Aether frowned, glancing at the recipie.
"Add flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt and espresso powder to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk through to combine or, using your paddle attachment, stir through flour mixture until combined well."
Dynasty measured out the ingredients and Aether added them to the bowl, which was sitting in the cupboard with all the plates and cups. Dynasty rummaged through a drawer to find a whisk, which he used to stir the mixture until it seemed to be combined well.
"Is this combined enough?" he asked Aether. Aether shrugged. "Hope so."
Dynasty ran back to Aether's laptop and looked at the instructions. "Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla to flour mixture and mix together on medium speed until well combined. Reduce speed and carefully add boiling water to the cake batter until well combined."
Aether measured out the ingredients while Dynasty raised the water to boiling temperature. Aether dumped the ingredients in. "Wait...what do we use to mix it with?"
Dynasty shrugged. "Do we have one of those mixer thingies?"
"Nope," Aether said. "I guess we'll just have to do it by hand?"
"I guess so," Dynasty said, mixing the batter.
"Alright, I'm gonna add in the boiling water, slow down the mixing." Aether poured in the boiling water and Dynasty slowed his stirring. Aether looked back at the recipe. "Okay, we're almost done. Distribute cake batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick or cake tester inserted in the center of the chocolate cake comes out clean."
Dynasty nodded and began pouring the cake batter into the first pan, then the next one. "Do we just stick em' into the oven now?"
Aether shrugged. "Yeah, I guess."
Dynasty stuck both of the cake pans in the oven and closed the oven door. Aether started putting away the ingredients and Dynasty hurried over to help him.
Aether walked over to the couch, where Crim had...fallen asleep? "Huh, that's weird...well, being emo and sobbing all the time must be exhausting...alsoCrim hasn't gotten sleep in a while..." Aether crashed in the other couch, and Dynasty crashed next to him.
They chatted for a while about their hobbies, their fandoms, and just life.
Dynasty glanced at the kitchen, which was perfectly clean.
"It's almost like my mother's idea of what my room should look like," Dynasty remarked.
"I'm sure your mom misses you and your messy room now," Aether said.
"She can't, she's dea--" He cut himself off, biting his lip. "Never mind..."
"I-I'm sorry, I didn't realize that she..." Aether lowered his head. "Gosh darn it, I'm so stupid..." He got up from the couch and started walking towards the door. "Y-you can go on without me."
"Wait!" Dynasty ran towards Aether. Aether turned towards Dynasty.
"Y-you aren't stupid! And i-it's fine, really! It was an honest mistake!"
Aether sighed. "You can stop pretending to like me, you know."
"I'm not pretending anything! I really do like you! You were the first person who was actually nice to me here!"
"T-thanks..." Aether smiled. "Dynasty, can I ask you a question?"
"Can I kiss you?" Is this really happening? Am I dreaming? If I am dreaming, please don't let me wake up right now...
"Of course," Dynasty said, feeling his cheeks flush. Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gos--
And then they kissed.
Aether ran his hands through Dynasty's hair, kissing him gently. Dynasty wrapped his arms around Aether's shoulders. It was the most magical first kiss he could ever dream of. Believe it or not, even with all of Dynasty's many admirers in Rivus, he'd never kissed anyone.
Finally, Aether pulled back, smiling and blushing. "That was perfect."
"It was..." Dynasty could feel himself blushing and grinning like an idiot too.
An awkward moment of silence hung in the air before it was broken by Crim, who had woken up.
"WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE RELATIONSHIP SUCCESS BESIDES ME??" he screamed, pulling out his earbuds.
"Caaaalm, Crim" Aether patted Crim on the back.
Dynasty frowned. "What's that smell?"
"THE SMELL OF MY BROKEN HEART BLEEDING ON THE FLOOR" Crim screeched, sobbing more.
"It smells like something burning...wait, THE CAKE!" Aether sprinted to the kitchen, opening up the oven.
"IT'S BURNING!" Aether screeched. Dynasty sprinted over, filled a spare pot with water from the sink, and dumped it on the fire. The cake was no longer on fire, but it was horribly burned and soaked through.
Dynasty sighed. "We must have left the cake in the oven for too long and it burned..."
"So, Crim can't have his cake?"
Aether frowned. "How about just chocolate? We've got dark chocolate and chocolate truffles in the back cupboard. Chocolate will make Crim feel better, right?"
"Sure," Dynasty said, digging through the cupboard. "There they are!" He pulled out the chocolate and tossed it to Aether, who ran over to Crim.
"We've got some chocolate for you," Aether said. Crim sighed.
"Ughhhh, fiiiiiine." Crim popped a truffle into his mouth. "This is pretty good..."
"Do you feel better now?" Dynasty asked.
"No, I still wanna be emo--" Crim burst into sudden, hysterical laughter. "This situation is just too ridiculous, I can't even--"
Dynasty felt a laugh escape him, and soon, the three were hunched over in laughter.
He wanted to freeze this moment, this entire day in time. Their lives were far from perfect, but it felt so good to laugh. I wish every day could be like this...I don't need money or fame...this is all I need.
This is perfect.
