My fault, my fault, my fault. Must save them, must save them, must save them! The thoughts drummed through her brain as she ran, a monitor-skin pouch bumping against her chest. The familiar surge of guilt began again, My fault, my fault. Must save them, must save them!
With a breathless gasp, she leaped up a rock and ducked. The mountain was her only hope. With great gasps and leapt up the mountain, dodging ugly rocks and hungry-looking thorns. Suddenly, a wicked flaming arrow with a silver tip whipped by her eye. Scantarte gave a shriek and involuntarily took a step backwards.
Right off the edge of the mountain.
Her monitor Skin pouch went flying to land, almost magically, between two sheltered rocks. Scantarte's last thought, as she saw a scaly claw reach out and grab the precious pouch she had sought so long to protect, was that she was never going to see it again...
And she was right.
"YOU LOST HER!?" the General winced as a stinging slap was delivered across his cheek. "Find her." the being in front of him snarled, "Or else you'll find yourself disappearing as well."
"Sir," the General began, almost imploringly, "You don't underestand, we found her body!"
There was a silence. Which was somehow worse for the poor general than the angry outburst of his master. "You found her body.." the voice slithered, "Was there any pouch on it?"
"No sir," The General said, "Is it important."
There was more silence before the laugh began, the horrible, hideous laugh that rang in General's ears.
"That pouch is more than important," the voice hissed, "It will shake the earth, and rumble the ground. And anything that is left afterwards will. be. shattered...."
